Godspell began life as John-Michael Tebelak's degree thesis. The show first opened off Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York on 17 May 1971; after 2124 performances the show moved to the Broadhurst Theatre for a further 527 performances.
Godspell opened in London on 17 Nov. 1971 where it ran for 1128 performances.
